Graphics By Žygimantas Augustinas At MAC Gallery

(New artworks in the gallery are red framed.)

"I am painting because it is better for me like this. It is better to paint that not to. This is the key thing. If I could not paint, I would have given up it long time ago. <...> it is enough to make a week break and my psyche collapses. This is the most important reason. If I have an idea - I create, if I don't have any ideas at that moment - I just paint. And then I don't control the later situation." (Žygimantas Augustinas, Atvirai vengiant tiesmukumo, 7 meno dienos)

Photography By Kęstutis Stoškus At MAC Virtual Gallery

(New artworks in the gallery are red framed.)

"These photographs disclose the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical architectural ensembles as complex and many-layer. While photographing them Stoškus shows their place in the city's panorama, their relationship with the relief, surrounding buildings and plants. He successfully portraits sculptural expression of the buildings' silhouettes as well as exterior links with interiors, construction and decor details." (Raminta Jurėnaitė)

Phantasmagorical Visions At Šarūnas Sauka Painting

(New artworks in the gallery are red framed.)

"Šarūnas Sauka is the only surrealist artist in the second half of the 20th century's Lithuanian art. He began his career in the Soviet times by shocking art councils and by being "removed" from the exhibitions. Šarūnas Sauka is a very productive, hardworking, intellectual and interesting person whose goal is not to shock. Surrealism and surrealistic expression is the only way for him to express his inner world, only those are shocked who percept everything directly and not metaphorically." (Ramutė Rachlevičiūtė, LRT „Ryto garsai")

Paintings And Drawing By Mikalojus Šalkauskas At MAC Virtual Gallery

(New artworks in the gallery are red framed.)

Mother and child is a very common motive in the paintings by Mikalojus Šalkauskas. "The child is portraited as bright blue vertical, mother - as massive orange block sending heavy energy. The relationship between mother and child does not resemble the typical picture of Child Jesus and Virgin Mary's positive link. The blue "child's" vertical is more likely to be oppressed than taken care of by orange "mother's block." (Eglė Mikalajūnė, "Vieta, kur gyvatė praryja savo uodegą", Šiaurės atėnai, 2011).

Poster's Sketch by Raimundas Sližys For The Film "Eternal Light"

(Click on the image to see more artist artworks.)

Painter Raimundas Sližys not only created the poster for the director's Algimantas Puipa film "Eternal Light" but also had a role in the film as KGB person. Artist made the poster in the form of grotesque which is very typical for his paintings. Grotesque also suits for the film that tells sometimes absurdly funny but sad drama about Lithuanian province society in Soviet times. However usually in the paintings artist laughs at the inhabitants of cities and their daily rituals and entertainment. We invite you to take a look at R. Sližys paintings and find out more about the artist himself.

Human's Figure - At The Center Of Adomas Jacovskis' Painting

New artworks at the gallery are red framed.

The main character of Adomas Jacovskis' painting is often called eternal. It is because of its constant repeat in artist's artworks. The author tells: "When you just glimpse at my artworks, they might seem similar but they are all different for me. I want to paint the same thing but each time better. I care only about painting, colour and how to paint it. I am changing gradually but I can notice certain key turning points. I don't know if others notice that as well."

Photography By Arūnas Baltėnas - Chronicle Of People

(New artworks in the gallery are red framed.)

Series "St. Peterburg. Without Choice" (2004-2005) gives the glimpse into the communal flats house in Kamennostrovskij av. in St. Peterburg. "Inner space, different than outside time, people and things that all have become old time "things" and witnesses of the past. They have become a secret. <...> Time in the house as well as its space is different, ticking in different speed. The photos does not clearly show what time of the day it is, which month or year..." (Asta Jackutė, Kitas laikas, kita erdvė. 7 meno dienos, 2005).

How to read paintings

A work of art remains speechless until the mind of perceiver speaks to it. Only then a man gets acquainted with his work. Once started this acquaintance doesn’t want to let go and always invites to come back and experience the joy of discovery, learn to watch and penetrate.

This segment is designed to help the works that are in the virtual MMC gallery to start speaking your language. Thanks to art critics and authors cooperation, texts-guidebooks are being made for paintings. This will give an opportunity to study the world of art in a closer look.

Teaching gallery – is an educational project aiming to present Lithuanian art in the space of a school. The project is implemented by the collaboration between non-govermental organization IDES and Modern Art Center. Teaching gallery is projected towards the school communities (teachers and students) who will get a chance to engage into the Lithuanian modern and contemporary art by exploring exhibitions of the artworks’ reproductions in the daily school space.
The first exhibition will be dedicated to the classical Lithuanian photography by presenting the works of Antanas Sutkus, Vaclovas Straukas and Romualdas Rakauskas. The reproductions are made using the artworks of Modern Art Center collection. The related educational material is prepared with the advice of art critics and educators and it could be used as an optional material for art lessons at school.
The first seminar for school teachers, taking part in Teaching gallery, will take place on the 25th April. It will be followed by the monthly exhibitions in 10 Lithuanian schools.
